La Folia Chamber Ensemble is a classical music group, and they're also something of an "original" in classical music circles. First off, the trio is made up of flute, violin and guitar---not your standard mix of instruments. By using a guitar instead of a cello, for instance, the sound produced is unique. Their music also goes beyond what you'd normally expect from a classical trio: while they're quite comfortable playing an evening of Baroque masters, they've expanded the concept of "chamber music" to include many genres, such as: songs from famous movie scores, jazz standards, contemporary popular music, and International styles.

La Folia is partly a family affair (Jerry happens to be married to the violinist), and they've performed together for seventeen years. After nearly 2,000 engagements, they've developed very high standards, and have achieved an exceptional level of quality and consistency. They love playing together, and are able to bring great joy to an event. Another thing that makes La Folia stand out is their use of amplification. Though few chamber music groups use it, Jerry Acosta, the group's guitarist, and director, feels it's essential-especially at some of the unusual locations they're asked to perform in. "We want everyone to be able to hear us," he says, "whether we're playing outdoors near a waterfall or in a room filled with 500 guests. We're not there to play so loudly that people can't talk to each other, but we are there to be heard." It's taken them years to achieve a balanced sound with just the right use of amplification, and it's one of the things that makes them exceptional.
